CESNET participates in the experimental deployment of 5G technology at VŠB-TUO
Prague, April 7th, 2022. The CESNET Association cooperates with VŠB – Technical University of Ostrava on the use of millimetre waves (mmW) of the fifth generation 5G NR mobile networks to conduct unique experiments with video transmissions with low latency or no compression. VSB-TUO thus became the first site in the Czech Republic where mmW technology was deployed with the contribution of the CESNET association. Since March this year, mmW technology for 5G has been in experimental operation at the local Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
The 5G mmW includes a powerful baseband (BBU) and radio unit in an 8x100MHz (2×2 MIMO) configuration in the 26.5-27.3 GHz band with a radio channel width of 800 MHz, with the channel width providing a good opportunity to achieve high throughput, which is limited by the technical limits of the radio layer to 2.5 Gbit/s. This technology enables high-speed radio data transmissions with very low latency, while being integrated into the existing 5G campus network architecture at the VŠB-TUO. It uses a Quectel RM510Q-GL development module with a Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 radio chipset as the end-devices for mmW transmissions, and prospectively with the X65.
A jointly formed working group of researchers from CESNET and VŠB-TUO is conducting experiments with video transmissions in virtual reality areas in pseudo-real or real time in environments where there are extreme demands on transmissions and at the same time mobility of the devices is required. Guaranteed speeds in the order of gigabits per second are required throughout the transmission, which can be achieved in the unique experimental environment of the national CESNET infrastructure and the mmW 5G campus network of the VŠB-TUO.
CESNET was founded in 1996 by universities and the Czech Academy of Sciences. It is engaged in research and development of information and communication technologies, building and developing a national CESNET e-infrastructure for research and education. Thanks to its research activities and achievements, it represents the Czech Republic in important international projects, especially in building the pan-European network GÉANT or grid projects (EGI.eu), and participates actively in their implementation. The association is also working on the use of high-speed networks for sharing multimedia data, both synchronously in the form of video conferencing and shared applications, and asynchronously in the form of streaming. Since December 2020, CESNET represents the Czech Republic in the international association dealing with the open science paradigm – EOSC AISBL.Více na: www.cesnet.cz
